October is a special month in the mountains, as it ushers in the glorious Fall colors that leave us in awe at the wondrous beauty in nature that restores our souls and lifts our spirits. Many of you may have made very special plans to enjoy the changing colors by getting away to the great outdoors to sight-see, hike, and explore against the backdrop of the beautiful emerging landscape. Sadly, some of you may have planned trips to national parks and memorials as part of your Autumn getaway, and those plans are now dashed due to the government shutdown. Is there anything you can do to make sure you and your loved ones don’t miss the opportunity to embrace the splendor of this beautiful season? Yes, there is!
Although five of the hiking trails in the Red River Gorge are currently closed, along with the information center and campgrounds, you can still drive through the tunnel and all around the huge Gorge, find your own hiking trails, picnic, hear the sound of the rushing river, go kayaking, and take in the colors and view the outcroppings of the mountains. Natural Bridge is still open, as it is a state park, and you can ride the sky lift up to Natural Bridge and Lover’s Leap, then hike back down, then stop in for a custom-made Pizza at Miquel’s. Visit Torrent Falls to see the rock climbers – or be adventurous and go climbing yourself! Two ziplines are open nearby. Guests staying at our cabins can explore several hiking trails right in Birch Hollow, including new ones that just opened up due to major road improvements throughout the Hollow. The views of the mountains from the high trails in the Hollow are glorious, and will only get better over the next few weeks! All of our cabins have either outside fire pits or an outside fireplace, so you can still roast marshmallows or make smores over an open fire, and relax in the hot tub as you take in the view. Bring your loved ones and re-connect with them and with nature, away from the stress of the city and the daily grind.
We have a weekday special going on right now – between October 10 and November 10: 15% off a minimum 2-day stay! Most weekends are booked, but why not treat yourself to a getaway during the week? Call the office for details.
Don’t sacrifice your Fall vacation at this wonderful time of the year! Come see the changing of the leaves in the Kentucky Rockies!! There is still so much to see and do – and we know you’ll want to come back again, when the shutdown is finally over!
